How Finland Teaches Mathematics in Lower Secondary School

It carries on into lower secondary, and maths is one of the subjects where schools most often allocate extra part time special education or co-teaching resource, alongside language subjects.
For pupils who find maths difficult, support usually means differentiated tasks, small group or co-teaching arrangements, and remedial sessions built into the normal timetable rather than pupils being pulled out or held back a year. For pupils who are ahead, the answer in Finland is rarely to accelerate them into a separate track; instead teachers differentiate upwards within the same mixed ability class, offering richer or more open-ended problems, and in some cases schools arrange extension work through cooperation with other classes or, occasionally, links to upper secondary content.

This is a gradual handover rather than a sudden one. Pupils continue to be expected to reason and estimate without a device for much of their work, and full, unrestricted calculator use is more associated with the later years of upper secondary school, well beyond the age range this page covers.
The aim is not to make maths harder for its own sake, but to help pupils reason with numbers, patterns and models they will keep meeting outside school.
